|OPEN TODAY FROM 10am until 5pm for MLK Jr. Holiday. With Martin Luther Kings Jr.’s birthday celebration around the corner, I thought I’d try to find a quote from the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner about bicycles. I failed on that point, but I found that I only had to look half a world away for the right quote. During our civil rights struggle, a future (1984) Nobel Peace Prize winner, and future (1984) recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr Award for Non-Violence was enjoying bike riding while absorbing the inspiration of MLK’s leadership in preparation for his own leadership role in transforming his own country.|
“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring.”
|Check out Bishop Desmond Tutu’s 2004 interview, and read about how important bicycling was to him growing up. (BTW – The quote illustrates his sense of humor, as well as his fondness for the bicycle.)|
